Ok We Got In, How Do We Get Out?

If you have been following the Innovative Pouch Packaging Blogs you certainly know by now that IPP can design your pouch, test your film, make the pouch and fill your pouch but how do you direct the evacuation of the pouch?

The easy answer is insert a spout into the pouch with a standard screw on cap.  Certainly not sexy but the majority of liquid products sold use the standard screw cap.  But you want your pouch to enhance the consumer experience so what else can be used to dispense the liquid.

Well to start off, let’s first introduce you to a fitment.  It is just another name for a spout. You might even hear it called a weldspout.  Whatever you call it, it’s the same thing used throughout the global pouch industry.

This fitment has a base sometimes called a canoe where the pouch film and the spout or fitment or weldspout come together using heat and pressure to form the dispensing point for your pouch.

Below, we define our canoe, vs. their canoe:

This marriage of film and canoe is critical for your liquid pouch because without a successful film/canoe marriage, the pouch will leak and become waste.

Assuming that we have mastered this welding process (in this instance it is safe to assume) and now have a pouch with a fitment in place, what is next?

Here is where the Innovative team at IPP show their insight creating for you a unique offering.  By selecting the right size spout IPP can help you accomplish two goals.

  • The Science/Technical: Having a fitment opening that is appropriate for the viscosity and volume of your product filled into the pouch. We have focused on four sizes that make up IPP’s standard offering.  A 9.6mm, 13 mm, 16 mm and 21.5mm fitment are offered to IPP clients without a charge for any tooling.  They can be inserted into the pouch and filled without the bothersome change parts cost which can be in the range of $30,000 to $40,000.
  • The Design/Fun: Select the unique cap or dispensing device to finish off your filled pouch. Pretty much any type of cap you’ve seen can be applied to a fitment style pouch! Other than the standard cap but there are a multitude of other options; Child Resistant Caps, Flip Top Caps, Pivot-Spouts, Disk Tops, Yorker Spouts, Pumps, Trigger Sprayers, Flip Top Roller, Push-Pull, Twist Tops, Tamper Evident options, the list goes on.
  • To give one an idea of the plethora of cap styles; there are vastly more options of caps than options for shrimp as explained by Bubba in the movie Forrest Gump. (There’s shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp…..)

So many caps, so many different types of shrimp. Yes, there is a lot to think about with all these options but relax!

Yes, you do have options galore but here is where IPP’s experience shows.  We chose fitment sizes that will accommodate any variety of cap options.  That is planning ahead and it is what we do at IPP.

With all of these options, why not contact IPP and let our team help you plan and execute your conversion to liquid pouches?  The preliminary work has been done for you.  Let’s discuss what else IPP can provide for your successful product launch.
